How can I tell if a ticket website is legit?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerCheck for a clear refund policy, real contact information, and secure payment options. Cross-reference the site with the artist's official links and look for reviews from independent sources.

Look for transparency and contact info

A legitimate ticket site will list a physical address, a phone number, and an email for customer support. If the only way to reach them is a web form, that's a red flag.

Read the terms and conditions and refund policy. Legit sites explain what happens if an event is canceled or postponed, and they don't hide fees until the last step of checkout.

Check the URL and security

The web address should start with 'https://' and show a padlock, but that alone doesn't prove legitimacy. Scammers can get SSL certificates too.

Look for misspellings in the domain name, like 'ticketmaster.com' vs. 'ticketmaster.co' or 'ticketmastr.com'. Typosquatting is common.

  • Does the site have a verifiable business address?
  • Is there a phone number you can call before buying?
  • Are there independent reviews on sites like Trustpilot or the Better Business Bureau?
  • Does the site accept credit cards, or only wire transfers and gift cards?
  • Are ticket prices suspiciously low compared to other sites?

Cross-reference with official sources

Go to the artist's official website or social media and see which ticket links they promote. If the site you're on isn't listed there, be cautious.

You can also check the venue's official website. Many venues list their authorized ticketing partners and warn about unauthorized sellers.

Common mistakes

  • Trusting a site just because it looks professional; scammers can build polished websites.
  • Assuming that a site is official because it appears in a search ad or has a familiar name.
  • Ignoring complaints online; a few negative reviews can be normal, but patterns of fraud reports are a serious warning.
